BROOKHAVEN — Sweltering and oppressive heat is forecast to get hotter Friday. National Weather Service in Jackson reports the temperatures in Brookhaven could hit 101 degrees.

Jackson recorded a high of 102 degrees Wednesday, which was 3 degrees shy of the record set in 2010. If Friday’s temperature hits 101 degrees it would be one degree shy of a record set on August 4, 2015.

Heat index values are forecast to be as high as 112 and heat stroke is imminent with any prolonged outside activity. NWS Jackson reports Saturday’s temperature will be cooler at a high of 99 degrees and a 30 percent chance of rain.

Tuesday and Wednesday of next week have a 50 percent chance of rain according to the long range forecast.

Safety first

Mississippi’s hottest couple of weeks each year are between July 27 and August 15. People should take precautions to beat the heat by staying hydrated, cool and taking steps to limit physical exertion.

A man in Natchez was fishing along the Mississippi River yesterday and was found dead. His dog was left in a running vehicle and was found dead as well. They are reportedly a heat related death according to initial reports by The Natchez Democrat.

People can check in on the elderly and those who are sick to make sure they are alright in this heat. If you work outside you need to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade to cool off.

Brookhaven and Lincoln County do not have any cooling shelters. The city has two splash pads located at Bicentennial Park and Brookhaven City Park.
