BROOKHAVEN — High temperatures could get up to 98 degrees in Brookhaven today and reach 97 Thursday and stay in the high 90s to the weekend. NWS Jackson warns the temperatures paired with humidity could create dangerous conditions.
Lincoln County and SW Mississippi is in a significant risk of heat stress this week. Peak heat indices could fall between 110 and 115. Heat stroke is increasingly likely due to prolonged outdoor activity in those temperatures.
The longterm average temperature for this week is 72 degrees to 92 degrees. Record highs were set at 101 on July 19 and 102 on July 20, 2000. The hottest week is about a week away before temperatures begin to drop back down.
Thunderstorms could return Saturday and Sunday with a 50 percent chance of precipitation or greater. The rain might give brief relief from the heat.
