The 5^th Squad Second Annual Veterans Cup golf tournament will be July 15 at Wolf Hollow in Wesson.

The two-person scramble format tournament will have cash and door prizes. Lunch will be provided. All proceeds go directly to help Mississippi veterans in need.

The cost is $250 per team or $125 per person, which includes 18 holes of play, use of a golf cart, lunch and one door prize. Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by shotgun start at 9 a.m. Title sponsors are Titan Signs & Wraps and Elite Beverage.

So far in 2023, 5^th Squad has helped 77 veterans with more than $25,000 in assistance. The “veterans helping veterans” non-profit has hosted events to support more than 1,200 deploying Mississippi National Guard soldiers.

In addition, 5^th Squad is in the process of donating $50,000 worth of rolling gym bags filled with toiletries and other necessities to homeless and vulnerable veterans, made possible by a partnership with Keesler Federal Credit Union.

“If we know of a veteran who is two months behind on his light bill and needs assistance, we’ll step in and pay the bill to help them get caught up,” said Peter Griffin, 5^th Squad member, Armed Forces veteran and Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy. “We’ve paid rent to keep veterans from becoming homeless, if that’s the danger. If a veteran is homeless, we will pay first and last month’s rent, or a deposit, so that veteran can get off the street and back on their feet.”

The group partners with the Mississippi Braves, where a portion of proceeds from specific games go to 5^th Squad to help veterans. The Memorial Day game raised more than $26,000 for the charity. The next such event is Aug. 18.

Griffin encourages everyone who can participate to be there for the golf tournament this coming weekend.

“It’s a great day of fun and supports a great cause, providing life-sustaining assistance to Mississippi veterans in need,” he said.
