BROOKHAVEN — Summer is here and it is hot, as it should be. Each year around the summer solstice, when the daylight is at its longest, high temperatures are in the 90s and only increase.
Historically, this year is no different. Brookhaven’s normal low temperatures from 1991 to 2020 are around 70 to 73 degrees while normal high temperatures are around 90 to 93 degrees. Monday’s recorded temperature high of 92 degrees was one degree higher than the normal and the low of 72 was also one degree higher than the normal for June 26.
The highest temperature ever recorded on June 26 was 102 degrees in 1930. The lowest temperature recorded on June 26 was 55 degrees in 1974.
While temperatures are forecast this week to exceed the normal temperatures, they are not at risk of setting a heat record, nor are they abnormally hot temperatures according to National Weather Service data.
Mississippi’s warmest days are yet to come this summer. According to the data, Brookhaven’s hottest days fall between July 25 and August 24 with the normal high temperature at 93.
