The Lincoln County Board of Supervisors has approved Saturday dates for the county’s upcoming spring cleaning event.

Residents can bring their household garbage to the old city dump on County Road, now called the Brookhaven Transfer Station, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 15, 22 and 29, and May 6.

Officials asked residents to take notice that the usual time of opening the facility at 7 a.m. has been pushed back an hour.

Solid Waste Coordinator Bob Knight reminded county residents that only non-hazardous items can be brought in — no paint, oil or other hazardous materials will be accepted. That goes for commercial rubbish, commercial tires or parts of housing, like trailers.

The time for those other items was March 11, Knight said. It costs $40,000 to conduct that round-up due to its hazardous conditions.

Things permitted include plastic items, furniture, recliners, couches, coolers, clothing and shoes, vacuums, carpet and porcelain and ceramics.

No metal, tree limbs, leaves or grass cuttings will be accepted. No construction materials, tires, paint, oil, fuels or chemicals, fluorescent bulbs or other hazardous waste will be accepted. No stoves, appliances, lawn mowers, basketball goals, tin or shingles are permitted.

Officials wanted to make clear these types of items will not be accepted and that the gates are monitored to ensure no one dumps items or scavenges.

Though supervisors seemed somewhat comfortable with the setup, Eddie Brown and the Rev. Jerry Wilson both mentioned they wanted to discuss in the near future having once again a time and place for residents to drop things off in the county for convenience.

“I’m thinking about what my voters want,” Brown said to the board. The rest of the board agreed to the discussion.

Supervisors said that residents have been saying they wanted more days in general to drop off garbage as well as drop-off locations more convenient to them than the Transfer Station location.

However, it was noted during the supervisors’ meeting that the issue with that solution is that the county ends up being responsible for items brought to the location that are deemed impermissible for dumping.
