The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Brookhaven will commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II in a special service Wednesday, Sept. 28.

The congregation will mark her life and service to the church as a member of the Anglican Communion. In her official capacity, Queen Elizabeth II was the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, the mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, of which many American Episcopal churches belong.

“It is a worship service in memory of the Queen that would coincide with the global observances of support for her life,” Rev. Andrew McLarty Jr. said.

The service will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the church on West Monticello Street. In accordance with the plan put forth by the Church of England for services commemorating the queen, bells will be rung one hour prior to the service and a Book of Condolences will be available for signing.

“As the Episcopal Church in town, I thought it was important to do something as the representative of the Church of England in Brookhaven,” McLarty said. “Anyone who wants to do something in honor of the queen or in memory of the queen is more than welcome to come and be a part of that experience. Come as you are. All are welcome. We’re happy to have anyone who wants to come and see our beautiful church and experience this service.”

The service will last approximately 45 minutes, and parking will be available behind the church and along North Church Street.

“It will be a beautiful worship service featuring hymns that the Queen herself loved, many of which were used at her funeral,” McLarty said.
