Beginning today — Saturday, July 16, 2022 — “988” will be the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas already have access to the line, the 988 number will be available nationwide on July 16.

The “9-1-1” of suicide prevention, the code will route to the existing 800-273-TALK (8255) number, which will remain available. The lifeline can also be accessed online at SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.

When a person calls, texts or chats to 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. The counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support and connect them to resources if necessary.

The Lifeline’s network of more than 200 crisis centers went into operation in 2005, and has proven its effectiveness. Numerous studies show callers feel less suicidal, less depressed, less overwhelmed and more hopeful after speaking with a Lifeline counselor.
