Families United Training Center in Brookhaven has received a $5,000 grant for a Project-Based Life-Skill Development project from CenterPoint Energy.
CenterPoint District Director Jay Reber made the presentation Tuesday to FUTC founder and Executive Director Falana McDaniel.
“We like to invest in our communities and programs making a different with our youth,” Reber said. “Not just with donations, but also with volunteer participation.”
The CenterPoint Energy Foundation provides engineers to work with children at FUTC in hands-on, fun learning projects.
“We are grateful for the monetary donations, but we like people to get involved, also,” McDaniel said. “We ask people to donate their time and skills to help these children learn what they can be when they grow up.”
Tuesday, children at FUTC demonstrated for Reber several air-powered cars they made from water bottles, balloons, straws and other items. Education Coordinator Toni Little taught the students how to make them, and organized the development project.
“That is amazing,” Reber said. “I’ve never seen that before. This is engineering!”
