Brookhaven is prepared for the impact of Hurricane Ida, according to Mayor Joe Cox.

“Hurricane Ida is one of the strongest storms to ever make landfall. Know the City of Brookhaven is prepared and that there have been extensive behind-the-scenes planning, preparation and strategies by my office, city departments, community leaders and our Lincoln County Emergency Management director for the impending impact and hazards of the storm,” Cox said Sunday evening.

“Thank you to all Solid Waste Department crews for their efforts yesterday and today to continue removing street debris which will help keep street drains open and lessen flying objects.”

A statement from the mayor’s office also stated:

“The worst of the storm for the Brookhaven area is anticipated to be between 9:00PM tonight (Sunday) to 9:00AM tomorrow (Monday) morning. We are expected to have sustained tropical winds of 60-90 mph with winds heaviest on the east side of I-55, flash flooding, up to 8 inches of rain, possible tornadoes, and extended power outages lasting days or even weeks.

“Note that power crews will not be out until the storm clears and winds are below 30 mph.

“Remember that the Brookhaven Building located at 1154 Beltline Drive is open as a temporary safe shelter for anyone who may need a place to stay. The Red Cross is now manning the shelter; however, bring any essential medications and personal items you may need. Social distancing and masks are required due to COVID and remember that pets are not permitted.

Please help us to keep you safe and keep our first responders safe by staying off the roads unless it is necessary for work or emergencies.”

The Mayor also reminded residents to:

▪️Secure all outdoor furniture, hanging plants, flags, decorations, etc.
▪️Have gas on hand for your generator and ensure that it will crank.
▪️Have your flashlights and batteries ready.
▪️Charge you electronic devices.
▪️Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled to ensure they are safe and have adequate supplies and necessities.
▪️Ensure the safety of your pets.
▪️Call 9-1-1 or the Brookhaven Police Department at 601-833-2424 in case of emergency.
