MHP reports 2 holiday deaths, none in Troop M area

The Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M reported two wrecks in Lincoln County over the Independence Day holiday weekend. Troop M reported no fatalities and no DUI arrests during the enforcement period.

MHP concluded its statewide 2021 Fourth of July enforcement period which began Friday, July 2, at 12:01 a.m. and ended Monday, July 5, at midnight. Throughout the period, MHP issued 6,140 citations with 146 DUI arrests. A total of 151 crashes were investigated including two fatalities and 50 injuries on state and federal highways, and interstate systems.

Troop M reported 106 hazard stops and 55 non-hazard. Troopers made two non-felony drug arrests in the coverage area of Lincoln, Lawrence, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Walthall, Pike, Amite and Wilkinson.

Troop M had three total wrecks, two motorist assists, two child restraint violations and eight seat belt violations.

 

Statewide fatalities

  • On Sunday, July 4, at approximately 11:33 a.m., MHP responded to a fatal hit and run crash on U.S. Hwy. 61 in Desoto County involving a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation revealed an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on Hwy. 61. Donterio T. Brewer, 32, of Charleston, Mississippi, was walking northbound in the southbound lane of the highway. The unknown vehicle collided with Brewer who received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead on scene.
  • Monday, July 5, at approximately 1:23 a.m., MHP responded to a fatal hit and run crash on MS Hwy. 373 in Lowndes County. The preliminary investigation revealed Marquis R. Dixon, 31, of Columbus, was traveling southbound on Hwy. 373 while riding a 2013 Kymco scooter. An unknown vehicle traveling on Hwy. 373 collided with the scooter. Dixon received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead on scene.

All crashes remain under investigation by MHP.
