A locally-founded nonprofit organization is hosting its second annual poker run on Oct. 17.

Warriors of the Badge, founded by Vicki Moak, mother of fallen officer Cpl. Zach Moak, was started to help families of fallen officers and other first responders by offering financial and emotional support.

Anyone can participate in the poker run as long as his or her vehicle is street legal. A poker run involves stopping at checkpoints to retrieve a playing card. Whoever has the best hand at the final checkpoint wins.

Warriors of the Badge will draw for a commemorative Glock handgun in honor of Moak. Raffle tickets are available for purchase for $5 each or five tickets for $20.

Tickets can be purchased on PayPal from warriorsofthebadge@gmail.com by using the friends and family option.

The event will take place at the Lincoln Civic Center, with concessions available. Live music will be provided by Michael McCall.

Warriors of the Badge is a nonprofit organization operating as 501(c). Contributions to Warriors of the Badge Foundation are tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

Moak hopes the event will be eye opening for the community.

“I’m hoping it brings more awareness to what we’re trying to do,” Moak said. “I know what a family goes through. I hope the community sees we care.”

She also hopes residents will begin to understand how important first responders are.

“I hope they see how much our first responders give to our community,” Moak said. “They are there no matter what. They run toward danger without a second thought. They give each and every day.”
