Progress is being made on a Brookhaven housing development.
The plan to build four dozen single-family homes on South First Street is still on track. The Mill Creek project is located just north of Dale Trail Northeast, and was approved by the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen in June 2019.
The project is being funded by Southport Financial, with construction by Winters Construction.
The 15-acre tract of land where Mill Creek will be located is seeing progress with the beginnings of site work.
“We are laying the necessary utilities, just the basics,” Project Consultant Len Reeves said.
This includes site grading, along with preparations being made for sewer and storm systems.
Reeves said the project’s progress is in line with the company’s timeline.
“We were fortunate to close in the month we originally planned,” Reeves said.
With the outbreak of COVID-19, many businesses have been forced to halt projects. For Mill Creek, this hasn’t been a problem. Across the state, construction work hasn’t stopped due to the pandemic.
“We haven’t seen that,” Reeves said. “Thankfully in Mississippi, construction is essential.”
The project has a 12-month construction schedule and is projected to be completed in 2021.
Southport Financial partner Scott Seckinger is also confident with how the project is progressing. He cites the city’s willingness to accept the project as its reason for their progress.
“The development is progressing right on schedule,” Seckinger said. “The city and the mayor have been incredibly responsive and this project would not have been possible without the support from the community.”
Seckinger hopes Mill Creek will revitalize the area it is being built in and give area families another option on the housing market.
“Our hope is that the end product will provide the citizens of Brookhaven an ultra-high-quality, energy-efficient, safe and affordable community to raise their families,” Seckinger said.
