Brookhaven Animal Rescue League now offers curbside adoptions.

Dogs and cats alike can still be adopted during the COVID-19 outbreak. BARL is offering curbside adoptions by appointment through April 27.

“It’s gone fairly well,” BARL Board President Rusty Adcock said.

In order to adhere to the governor’s executive order, the shelter is closed to the public. But individuals interested in adopting a pet can set up an appointment. Available animals can be viewed on Adopt a Pet’s website by searching for Brookhaven, Mississippi.

“You can do your homework online,” Adcock said. “It makes it easier for the curbside pickup.”

The shelter has been closed to the public for most of April, and the new curbside adoption process began Monday.

Potential adopters can complete paperwork online or print it and complete it ahead of time before arriving for curbside adoption.

“It should make it an easy process,” Adcock said.

Volunteers are following guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he said, and BARL encourages potential adopters to as well when they arrive for their new pet.

“It seems to be working well,” Adcock said. “There’s always a way around things.”

While BARL has advertised that the curbside adoption will take place until April 27, the shelter plans on operating this way until the shelter-in-place order is lifted.

“We’re going to abide by state regulations, stick to the rules,” Adcock said.

Adoption fees are $75 for cats and $85 for dogs. This fee includes spaying or neutering, microchipping, and current vaccines and worm medicine.

Adcock says this will be a benefit to the community during this time.

“I think any kind of addition of a pet to a family is beneficial. It enriches their lives,” Adcock said. “We’re helping stray animals get care until they find new homes.”
