Virginia Dowdy, 91, of Columbus, Mississippi, passed away Feb. 15, 2020, while sleeping peacefully at the home of her sweet caregiver and dear friend, Brenda Bozeman.
A celebration of life will be on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, Eupora, Mississippi, with Rick Young officiating and Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, directing. A graveside service will be on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Riverwood Memorial Park, Brookhaven, Mississippi.
Mrs. Dowdy was born in Mathiston, Mississippi, on Jan. 6, 1929, to the late Charles and Virginia Breland Young. She was one of 12 children — eight girls and four boys. Mrs. Dowdy was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched. She worked as a teacher and bookkeeper but her most enjoyable job was selling the outdoor furniture her husband Dorman made at markets all over the state. She loved to cook and sew, but nothing gave her greater joy than making peanut butter cookies and tiger butter for her “favorite boys.” And her favorite boys loved to eat them. She loved all her family and the many get-togethers we all shared over the years. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dorman Dowdy, and eldest grandson, Benjamin Dowdy.
Virginia was the beloved mother of Sharon Dowdy of Wylie, Texas, and Rodney Dowdy of Columbus, Mississippi; grandmother of Nick Dowdy, Matthew Dowdy, Michael Dowdy, Justin Thurman, and Dylan Cook; great-grandmother of Sophie Dowdy; and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Nick Dowdy, Matthew Dowdy, Michael Dowdy, Justin Thurman, Dylan Cook and David Young. Honorary pallbearer will be Benjamin Dowdy.
