ROXIE — The National Weather Service in Jackson on Tuesday confirmed a tornado caused damage to a house and barn and minor damage to a person in Franklin County on Monday.

NWS Meteorologist Latrice Maxie said a survey crew on the ground Tuesday in Franklin County confirmed that the tornado that hit near Roxie on Monday was an EF2, which is a midlevel tornado with winds between 111 and 135 mph on the Enhanced Fujita Scale that goes from an EF0 with winds of 65-85 mph and EF5 with winds of 200 mph.

“The report was from around White Apple (community) that there was damage to a barn and house,” Maxie said, adding that one person reported minor injuries from flying debris.

Maxie said a trained weather spotter reported the tornado Monday just outside of the Roxie community in Franklin County and the NWS survey crew confirmed it was an EF2 on Tuesday.

“The storm in Roxie may have come out of Wilkinson County and out of Amite and gone into Lincoln County,” Maxie said Tuesday afternoon.

Weather survey crews were still assessing potential tornado damage in Wilkinson and Lincoln counties, Maxie said, but as of Tuesday afternoon had not confirmed any other tornadoes in Southwest Mississippi from Monday’s storm system.

The storm system did widespread damage Monday throughout other parts of Mississippi and Louisiana and is believed to have been responsible for at least four deaths.
