Registration for the Brookhaven Little Theatre’s teen summer workshop is underway and while they’ve reached their capacity for performers, they’ve added more behind-the-scenes opportunities for teens to participate in the BLTeens’ production of “Grease: School Version.”
BLTeens summer workshop is open to rising seventh-graders up to graduating seniors. The four-week workshop begins May 24 with a parent orientation at 7 p.m. Teens will produce at least five live on-stage presentations at the historic Haven Theatre June 21-24.
Tuition is $275.
Participants will experience instruction taught and directed by seasoned theatre veterans, they’ll meet guest artists from all of the U.S. who are professionals in theatre, casting, choreography, lighting and sound, hair and makeup, set design and directing and acting. Students will be introduced to all the elements of theatre production in daily classes.
“During our four-week workshop, teens will work behind-the-scenes and alongside our staff of theater professionals to bring ‘Grease’ to the stage, from lighting and sound to costumes and make-up,” said BLT Executive Director Emily Waterloo. “Opportunities include assistant director, assistant choreographer, assistant to the producer, house manager and many others.”
Teens who want to be on a waiting list to possibly perform in the G-rated show should call 601-990-2243. BLTeens are limited to 24 performers because of contractual obligations, but there will be plenty of room for production crew members, she said. Paden Phillips will direct the production.
In addition to acting, vocal and technical direction, students will participate in workshops with leading professionals in the industry. Broadway actor Randy Redd, who has ties to Brookhaven, will be coaching students during the workshop. Professionals in light and sound productions and representatives from Morgan Casting will also be working with the teenagers.
Waterloo said they asked Redd to participate last year but he was performing in “Million Dollar Quartet” as Jerry Lee Lewis and couldn’t fit it into his schedule. This year he asked if he could come help out.
“He’s been following successes and wanted to come in,” he said.
Waterloo said productions, such as BLT’s recent sold-out performances of “Peter Pan” require much more than the actors on the stage. She needs teenagers who are interested in all aspects of theater, such as lights, costumes and sound.
“It takes a village to put on a show so we want to train the next generation to be those things,” she said. “I want to reach out to those kids who are technically minded. We need them at the theatre. We would love to attract those kids to be part of the workshop.”
Registration is available online at brookhavenlittletheatre.com or download the application and mail it with payment to Brookhaven Little Theatre, P.O. Box 943, Brookhaven, MS., 39602. If paying by card, call 601-990-2243.
Younger theatre students can participate in Haven Kids drama camp July 9-20, which ends with productions of “The Lion King Kids” July 19-20. Tuition is $200 and is due by July 1 to secure a spot.
“We are filling up fast,” Waterloo said.
