After notching an 8-5 win over 5A Pearl River Central and a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Sumrall last Saturday in Columbia, the Brookhaven Academy Cougars bounced back in sistrict play this week outscoring AA Region 3 foe Clinton Christian Academy 27-0 in two contests.

At home Tuesday night the bats were hot as the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Dawson Zumbro led the way with a double and a single as O’Neill Burgos, Nick Ogden and Brady Spring also doubled.

Tucker Watts and Levi Smith each had a single. The Warriors, filtering through three pitchers, gave up seven walks and also committed three errors to aid in the Cougars scoring onslaught to halt the game in a fourth inning mercy rule at 12-0. Dawson Flowers pitched all four innings on the mound allowing two hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

It was more of the same for the Cougars as they traveled to the Clinton Christian Academy Warriors’ campus Thursday afternoon, as they stomped out 15 runs in three innings with the hot bats continuing.

Again the Warriors struggled on the mound with seven walks filtering through three different pitchers trying to calm the Cougar offense. Zumbro led the way just short of the cycle hitting a single, a double and a home run in as many plate appearances.

Also going long for the Cougars were senior catcher Watts with a rqo-run shot in the first inning, and first baseman Burgos delivered a grand slam in the second inning. Levi Smith added to the hits with a double and a single and Dawson Flowers added a double to the hits column. 

On the mound for the Cougars, Tanner Watts started only allowing one hit in two innings of work and Taylor Freeny pitched the final inning recording the last three outs as the game ended in a 15-0 mercy rule after only three innings.

The Cougars are 17-6 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in district play and will complete district play next week traveling to Sylva Bay Academy on Tuesday and finishing at home on Thursday night. The wins against Clinton Christian Academy insures the Cougars a postseason appearance, and a win against Sylva Bay will guarantee a first place finish which includes a bye the first round of playoffs.
