When Bogue Chitto kicked off the annual Possum Bowl against Loyd Star on the Hornets field Friday night, they didn’t expect senior wide receiver Patrick Price to return the opening kick for a touchdown. But Price did, and the Hornets added a point after to lead the game early 7-0.

Almost halfway into the first quarter, Bogue Chitto’s freshman running back Owen Anderson scored on a six-yard pass to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard 7-6.

Loyd Star’s next possession didn’t last very long, as the Bobcats recovered a Hornets fumble to end their drive. With only 14 seconds left in the first quarter, the Bobcats senior quarterback Trey Nettles ran a three-yard touchdown into the end zone. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but Bogue Chitto was ahead 12-7.

Price scored again for Loyd Star and the point after brought the Hornets to the lead 14-12. Just a few minutes later in the second, Nettles completed to Bogue Chitto junior running back Lafredrick Dillion for a 15-yard touchdown, to which the Bobcats added a two-point conversion to regain the lead 20-14. An interception just seconds before the half kept the score the same heading into the break.

Two-thirds of the way into the third quarter, junior Hornets running back Je’Mario Clay scored a one-yard touchdown and Loyd Star added a good point-after kick to get back on top 21-20.

Loyd Star junior running back JaQuan Berry started the final quarter with a 10-yard touchdown. Berry didn’t let up, adding a 21-yard touchdown and an 18-yard touchdown.

Loyd Star ended the night with a 42-20 victory. The Hornets face Amite County on the road Friday for a district matchup. Bogue Chitto will host Pisgah for their homecoming game.
