Fun is the name of the game.
St. Mark Masonic Lodge No. 24 and Electra Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 24 are putting on a community fun day. Hoopfest, flag football, volleyball, kickball, jumpers and more are a few of the activities planned.
Latawyna Murray, a sister of Electra Chapter 24, will be participating in this year’s event.
“If there is anything positive that’s going to come out of helping the community, I’m all for it,” Murray said.
Murray credits Steve Jones, of St. Mark Lodge, for getting the event kickstarted.
“With school about to start, I wanted to give the kids something to do,” Jones said.
This year will feature special needs kids competitions as well, including basketball and flag football.
“I’m really excited about this, because I have a special needs child,” Jones said. “I haven’t heard of many organizations that do many things with special needs kids, so I’m really looking forward too that.”
Jones and Murray are hoping for a big crowd Saturday.
“I would like to see everyone get together as a community,” Murray said. “No matter what the race or ethnicity, I would love for everyone to come out and enjoy themselves.
“I would love for the mayor, alderman or city officials to come out,” Jones said. “If they have any encouraging words to our kids, it would be great. I know these kids would love to hear that. I’m really looking forward to this being a success and seeing all of the smiles on the kids faces.”
There will be free burgers, fries and hotdogs. The event will be Saturday at noon at Fannie Mullins School at 717 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Brookhaven.
