The veggies are coming.
So are the fruits and homemade breads and jellies.
It’s that time of the year again for local growers and vendors to tempt buyers at the Brookhaven Farmers Market. Opening day is scheduled for May 19 at Railroad Park from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“We’re very excited about this year’s opening day,” said Rebecca Bates, county agent with the Mississippi State University Extension Service. “This is the earliest we’ve ever opened the market and with this year being the 10th year anniversary, we will be celebrating the market’s birthday throughout the summer.”
From fresh potatoes, snap beans, squash and baked goods, if you’re looking for locally-grown produce and homemade foods, this is the place to find it.
Lincoln County Farm Bureau will grill hamburgers to sell with all profits donated to the Brookhaven Farmers Market.
Ralph Miller will be playing live music during the market and Bates encourages shoppers to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the morning in Railroad Park.
Several years ago the farmers market expanded to Tuesdays with vendors set up in the afternoon so those shoppers who had to work on Fridays could come to the Tuesday event.
The farmers market will be open on Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Godbold Transportation Center (Amtrak Station) starting May 23.
Mark your calendars now for June 9 for “Dairy Day.” This event is one of the market’s biggest days as local dairymen will be there with dairy calves for kids to feed and pet. There will be plenty of free chocolate milk and ice cream as well as live music, Bates said.
Vendors interested in participating in the market should call Bates at 601-835-3460. “The more the merrier. We would love to have anyone selling locally-grown produce,” she said.
