Over 200 kindergartners collected eggs during Mamie Martin Elementary’s annual Easter egg hunt Tuesday.
Each child’s goal was to collect as many as possible, but they only needed seven to make sure they received their snack and juice at the end of the hunt.
Principal Rob McCreary enjoys watching all of the students have fun while collecting the eggs. All grades — pre-school through second grade — are provided with different times and dates to hunt. The first hunt was held Monday and two more will be held today.
“We’ve been doing this for 15 years.” McCreary said. “We starting doing first, second and kindergarten and we added pre-k last year.”
Before the hunt, the kindergarten teachers discussed the history of Easter with their students.
“Long ago in Germany they had a Easter bunny that laid eggs,” kindergartner Polly Jane Waterloo said. “The children made nests.”
Kindergarten assistant teacher Erica Bridwell said students get a chance to have fun while learning something new.
“I believe the most rewarding part about having an Easter egg hunt for our students is seeing the excitement that it brings them. Some of the kids may have never even been to an Easter egg hunt befits so that gives us (educators) an opportunity to teach them what it’s all about,” Bridwell said.
Six-year-old Madison McGee said this was her first hunt.
“It was good and I liked it,” McGee said. “I caught seven eggs and got my snack and juice.”
All kindergartners got a chance to hug the Easter bunny as well. Kindergartner Gunner Windham is determined to learn more about the bunny.
“The Easter bunny lives in a magical place that no one’s heard of,” Windham said. “I’m going to find that place one day.”
