Absentee voting for May’s primary election begins Monday for Brookhaven residents.
“This election is for ones that’ll be out of town on election day, over 65 years-old, or (their) work schedule won’t allow them to vote in May,” Lincoln County Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield said.
April 29 is the last day to vote absentee in the municipal election. The Brookhaven City Clerk’s office will be open that day — a Saturday — from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
Residents can vote at the city clerk’s office or call 601-833-2362 to request that a ballot be mailed to them.
“All mailed ballots have to be retuned by Monday, May 1,” Bairfield said. “They cannot hand-deliver it back.”
New Lincoln County residents have to register at least 30 days prior to the election.
“They need a photo ID and, by law, we mail the card to them to verify where they live,” Bairfield said.
Current residents who have changed addresses or gotten married also need to update their information at City Hall before the poll books are printed.
“We print the poll books about a week before the election,” Bairfield said.
Voting for the primary election will be May 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:
• Ward One: Bi-Centennial Building on 200 Main St.
• Ward Two: Alexander Jr. High School on 713 Beauregard St.
• Ward Three: Lincoln County Governmental Complex in the city boardroom on 301 South First St.
• Ward Four: Brookhaven Elementary School in the auditorium on 300 South Church St.
• Ward Five: Brookhaven Recreation Department in the main room on 689 Hwy. 51 North
• Ward Six: Mamie Martin School in Room A-1 on 420 Vivian Merritt St.
Bairfield said there is a need for poll workers for the primary and the general election. Call 601-833-2362 for more information.
The general election will be June 6.
