Loyd Star gets needed win over Bassfield 57-50

The Loyd Star Hornets got a much needed win Tuesday night on the road against Bassfield to pick up their second district win of the season by a score of 57-50. The win extends the Hornets’ winning streak to four games and moves them to 7-5 overall on the season. The loss drops Bassfield to 4-5 overall.
“We had a great game offensively, especially from Cade Hodges,” Loyd Star head coach Gene Britt said. “Overall, it was one of our best games of the year.”
Junior guard Cade Hodges caught fire for Loyd Star Tuesday night, hitting six three-pointers and leading the Hornets with 20 points for the game. Senior point guard Zach Arnold was the next leading scorer for the Hornets with 18 points, all of them coming in the first half, and sophomore forward Dane Smith was next in scoring with 12 points.
Loyd Star dominated early, taking a 38-23 lead into halftime. With Loyd Star winning 47-31 heading into the fourth quarter, Bassfield would outscore the Hornets 19-10 in the final quarter to make a run, but Loyd Star pulled the victory on the road in district play.
Senior guard Mason Sims led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 14 points on the game and senior guard Gerobe Peters followed up with 12 points.
Coach Britt said that Bassfield is the most athletic team in the district, so the win gives Loyd Star much needed momentum heading into their matchup with Enterprise Friday night.
Lady Jackets 74, Lady Hornets 50
In a battle of undefeated teams, the Lady Hornets suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night on the road at Bassfield by a score of 74-50. The loss drops Loyd Star to 11-1 overall and the win keeps Bassfield perfect at 10-0.
“We had way too many turnovers and we were not in sync with our offense,” Britt said. “We will learn from this loss and move on.”
In a high scoring first half, Bassfield kept ahead and took a 35-28 over the Lady Hornets at halftime.
Bassfield opened up the second half on fire, outscoring Loyd Star 26-9 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 61-37 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it was Bassfield that remained undefeated when the buzzer sound.
Senior guards Lydia Britt and Faith Bergeron led the lady Hornets in scoring with 12 points each. Senior forward Makenzie Smith ad an off night for the Hornets, scoring 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting from the field. The Lady Hornets 24 turnovers on the night, which was the deciding factor in the game.
For Bassfield, senior guard Derria White and junior forward Azaria Magee both scored 23 points to lead Bassfield in scoring.
Next up for Loyd Star are home games against district rival Enterprise. The girl’s game tips off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
