Is Brookhaven ready to do the “Time Warp” for the first time? Organizers at the Brookhaven Little Theatre hope they are.

BLT is showing the cult-classic, audience participation film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” for the first time Saturday. Doors open at 6:30 and the pre-show warm-up starts at 7 p.m. The movie is set to begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and include a bag of props to use during the show.

“This is our first year to host the event,” BLT board member Troy Douglas said. “It was mentioned in a couple of play practices I’ve been at that we should bring it to the theatre.”

The event is sure to be a full-out party, made up of more than just watching the movie, Douglas said.

“The audience will participate,” he said. “Each guest will receive a prop bag full of everything needed to participate along with the movie.”

“Rocky Horror,” released in 1975, follows the adventures of a young couple, Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon), who are lost in the rain and end up at the castle of a transvestite mad scientist, Dr. Frank-n-furter (Tim Curry).

Frank unveils his creation, a young man named Rocky Horror, who fears the doctor and rejects his sexual advances. When Frank-N-Furter announces that he is returning to the galaxy Transylvania, Riff Raff the butler and Magenta the maid declare that they have plans of their own.

Ticket comes with props

The prop bag will include:

• Rice to throw during the wedding scene as the newlyweds exit the church

• Water pistol to squirt water to simulate rain as Brad and Janet arrive at the castle

• Newspaper to hold over your head during the rain, like Janet

• Phone light to light up the theatre during the “There’s a light” verse of “Over the Frankenstein Place”

• Rubber gloves to snap in time with Frank during and after the creation speech

• Noisemakers to join the applause at the end of the creation speech

• Toilet paper to hurl into the air when Brad cries “Great Scott!”

• Toast to join in Frank’s toast

• Party hat to join Frank in putting on a party hat at the dinner table

• Playing cards to shower the theatre in cards when Frank sings “Cards for sorrow, cards for pain” during “I’m going home”

“All of the props go along with the movie,” Douglas said. “It makes it more of an event than just watching a movie. People started doing the audience participation at midnight showings as a way to get other people together and to have a good time.”

Crash course in the ‘Time Warp’ dance

Douglas plans to begin the event with a crash course in how to dance the “Time Warp,” and how to use the prop bag.

“I’m going to be the emcee,” he said. “I want to explain to the newcomers what to do, and we will have several games before the movie starts.”

In addition to the movie, the event will feature a costume contest.

“If somebody wants to dress up like a character in the movie, or just dress up to dress up, we encourage it,” Douglas said. “We will give away prizes throughout the night for the best costumes.”

The movie is one hour and 40 minutes long, and has an R rating.

“We would like to stress that the film is rated R for adult content,” Douglas said. “If anyone does bring their children, expect that. We will not turn away children, but will leave that up to the parent’s discretion.”

Tickets can be purchased at the door or at www.haventheatre.org. The prop bag is included in the ticket price. A cash bar will also be available throughout the event.

“We’re not really sure if Brookhaven is ready for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but, the only way to find out as is do it,” he said. “It’s going to be a great night.”
