Photo by Donna Campbell/Workers with Smith Painting and Contractors were continuing a roof repair job at the Union Station Depot Wednesday. Freddie Williams (left) prepares boards for painting, while Tommy Pickett and Dewey Troupe install the new soffits along the edge of the roof. The building, known as the old train depot, is home to the Military Memorial Museum on the south end, while the Brookhaven Recreation Department uses the north end. The depot, which sits between the train tracks and South Whitworth Avenue, was once a busy stopping point for the Illinois Central, which constructed the the Tudor-revival brick building in 1907. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
