Hurricane, hail funding from FEMA still pending

Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Clifford Galey said work is still underway for the county to receive some funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for damages from the hail storms in March and also from Hurricane Isaac, which hit the state in 2012.

District 4 Supervisor Eddie Brown criticized the organization in a recent board meeting because the county is still waiting for funds for damages from Isaac four years later.

Galey said the delay for Isaac funds was due to an error on the paperwork submitted by FEMA.

“I’m going to fix it so we can get that taken care of,” Galey said.

Lincoln County suffered significant damage from March storms with residents seeing quarter-sized hail, several multi-vehicle accidents and leaky roofs at the library, jail and justice court buildings. County engineer Ryan Holmes told the board in April that the damages sat at about $200,000.

Galey has been working with FEMA to draw up worksheets which determine which damages qualify for reimbursement.

Each repair project is individually assessed to determine if it qualifies, and those projects must be completed before they are eligible.

Galey said worksheets for the March storms were completed during the week of Aug. 29. Galey will spend the next week going over the paperwork, and then he will bring it to the board for approval.
