The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars went 1-2 this week in soccer.
The Lady Cougars lost a heartbreaker against district powerhouse Laurel Christian by a score of 5-4 in overtime Tuesday.
BA was down in the second half 3 – 1, but mounted a comeback to tie the game 3 -3 on a 30-yard penalty kick by defensive back Natalie Rials. BA took the lead 4 -3 in the overtime period and then gave up two goals in the final 11 minutes to lose the game.
Senior Julianna Mills, Sophie Wilson and Harley Smith scored goals in the game. Harley Smith scored her goal off of a Kaitlyn Bass corner kick.
“I am happy with the girls’ effort tonight. Laurel Christian used to come in here and grab an easy victory, but this team has closed the gap with the better teams and does not let anybody push them around anymore,” head coach Mark LeBlanc said.
Thursday, the Lady Cougars beat Hattiesburg Forerunners 4-0 in a non-district game. Julianna Mills scored two goals and Shelby Flum and Harley Smith added one each.
The game was called in the third quarter due to lightning.
Saturday, the Lady Cougars visited Laurel Christian again in what was another physical game. The lady cougars went down 2-0 at halftime and played inspired soccer in the second half but loss 2-1.
Shelby Flumm scored on a perfect cross from Harley Smith.
The Lady Cougars are now 6-6 on the year.
“We were not ready to play when we started the game today. We came out flat and it cost us the game,” LeBlanc said.
The Cougars’ next contest is slated for Monday. They will face Parklane Academy on the road at 5 p.m.
