The Brookhaven Academy Cougars will have to wait at least one more week before attempting to break their 16-game losing streak.
The Cougars dropped their home opener to Central Hinds 36-0 Friday.
Senior quarterback Madison Smith completed 12 passes for 106 yards and two interceptions in the losing effort. Smith also had 15 yards rushing to lead the ground attack.

Defensively, the Cougars got a solid effort from Connor Griffin. The senior linebacker was in on 8.5 tackles on the night, and also had one tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry.
Grant James was not far behind Griffin with 7 tackles. Connor Smith had 6.5 tackles and Madison Smith tallied 5 tackles with 3 tackles for loss.
“I felt like our kids played hard and we were a lot better defensively than we have been,” Cougars’ head coach Ron Rushing said. “I thought Connor Griffin had a great game.”
Central Hinds was paced by quarterback Tanner Leggett.
The senior quarterback passed for 140 yards and one score and ran for another 68 yards and one touchdown.
Central Hinds’ running back Prentiss Brown rushed for 61 yards on 14 carries and tallied a touchdown of his own. He also led his team in receiving with three catches for 88 yards and one toucdown.
Central Hinds got on the board quickly in the first after Leggett reached the endzone on a 32-yard scamper. With 7:08 left in the quarter, the quarterback would get another score after Brown took one of his passes in from 37 yards out to bring their advantage to 14-0.
The Hinds Cougars managed just one score in the fourth. Running back Kile White capped off a drive by Central Hinds with a four-yard touchdown to end the half with a 21-0 lead over Brookhaven Academy.
Central Hinds drew blood again with 6:14 left in the third. Brown scored from 14 yards out to bring the score to 28-0.
The Central Hinds defense registered the final touchdown for the Cougars on the night in the fourth quarter to put the game away for good.
With 6:30 left in the game, Blake Montpeliear stepped in front of a Madison Smith pass and took it in from 35 yards out.
Rushing was optimistic after the loss, and said he was pleased with his team’s play.
“I was happy with our effort,” he said. “Early we made mistakes that put us in the hole but the effort is there, we just have to be cleaner.”
The Cougars will face another tough test Friday when they hit the road to face Centreville. The Tigers are looking to bounce back after losing to Parklane.
