Easterling said more than 5,000 teams in their region began the season with hopes of reaching this milestone.

“When you say you’re going to the World Series, it means a lot more when you realize there were 5,000 when you started and now there is only 12, and we are one of those,” Easterling said. “This is a really, really good group of guys and we just want to thank everybody in this room that had anything to do with the complex out here and the new facilities that we have.

All of the board members and Mayor Joe Cox agreed the team had accomplished a mighty feat and wished them luck.

“Congratulations to you for representing Brookhaven, Lincoln County and the state of Mississippi,” Cox said. “It is just fantastic.”

City paving project

Ryan Holmes, an engineer with Dungan Engineering, informed the board at Tuesday’s meeting that Dickerson & Bowen, the project contractor, has not made much progress on the paving project since the last board meeting.

“I regret to say since the last time we’ve met, I think they’ve only worked two days in July,” Holmes said. He said contractor’s employees are starting to work on South Washington Street and are finishing a few streets in Brignall.  They planned to work on streets again today, he said.

“Hopefully, they are going to stay and finish what we’ve got,” he said.

Dickerson & Bowen has until the end of July to complete 100 percent of the $3.1 million paving project to keep from being fined by the city, Holmes said.

“I think it will probably take them about seven to 10 days to finish,” Holmes said. “We are staying on top of it.”

In other board business:

• Police Chief Bobby Bell informed the board that the south parking lot on Railroad Avenue will be used by several community organizations for the Hoopfest Basketball Tournament on Aug. 23.

• Bell thanked the board and community members for the thoughts and prayers during the last few weeks while they mourn the loss of their colleagues in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

• The board approved Sunbelt Sealing’s bid of $108,970 for the airport runway pavement crack seal and pavement markings project. Sunbelt Sealing was the second lowest bid. The company with the lowest bid withdrew it, Holmes said.

• Holmes told the board that he had a preconstruction conference with E. Cornell Malone Corp., the Old Train Depot contractor, last week. The company is waiting for the materials to come in, but will be making progress soon, he said. The project is expected to be complete by Nov. 21, Holmes said.

• The board approved Greenbriar’s bid of $13,100 to complete repair work at the Wastewater Treatment plant.

• The board adopted two resolutions at Tuesday’s meeting. The first recognized St. James M.B. Church for it 150 years of service to the community. The second recognized Miss Mississippi Laura Lee Lewis for creating the Mentoring Matters program and for her accomplishment of being crowned Miss Mississippi in June.
