Property crime can happen just about anywhere at any time. Law enforcement can’t have eyes on everyone’s house and property, which means residents need to do their part to curb crime.

The Brookhaven Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested two individuals who are accused of several recent burglaries. Police Chief Bobby Bell said the two were driving through neighborhoods checking for unlocked vehicles.

They apparently found a few. They took cameras, wallets, guns, medications, cell phones and money, according to police.

Bell said the suspects were caught on surveillance cameras of residents, and he thanked those residents for helping to identify the two.

The easiest way to deter this type of crime is to lock your vehicles. Sure, some determined criminals will simply break into a car, but most will likely move on to an easier target. Leaving valuables in plain sight in an unlocked car simply makes the criminal’s job that much easier.

It would be nice if we lived in a world where we didn’t have to lock doors – on our cars or homes. But that’s not the case. Do your part to reduce crime — keep your doors locked.
