Morton eliminates Wesson

MORTON – The Wesson Cobras fell to the Morton Panthers 7-6 Monday night in the second game of a best-of-three series in the Class 3A playoffs.

Wesson lost to Morton 6-4 in the first game Friday.

“This was a tough loss for us,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “The guys fought hard offensively and defensively to try to bring the series back home but Morton made the plays at the end to win the series. Overall, I was pleased with our guys’ efforts. We had a great season.”

The Cobras finished the season with a 18-7 record.

Morton 7, Wesson 6

Tied 6-6, Morton managed to push in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the first three innings, the Cobras dominated Morton to claim an early 5-0 lead.

Morton rallied back in the fourth and fifth, scoring six runs to take a 6-5 lead, but the Cobras fought back to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth.

Jeremy Smith suffered the setback on the mound for the Cobras with five strikeouts and two walks.

Aaron Burt was the winning pitcher for Morton with three strikeouts and one walk. Coby McCory (2K, 2BB) started for the Panthers and pitched two innings. Dylan Grantham (4K, 4BB) pitched three innings in relief.

Will Hulon directed the Cobras with a double, a single and two RBIs. Hitting safely were Jeremy Smith, Max Daughdrill, Alex Mooney, Jimmie McQuage and Preston Middleton. McQuage finished with two RBIs and Mooney had a RBI.

Wes Goss powered the Panthers with a homerun. Kyle Porter provided a double and a single. Coby Gilbert ripped a double. Jase Grant and Coby McCory finished with a single each.
