Brookhaven School District’s board of trustees will be led by Erin Smith for the 2016-2017 year.
Smith, who holds one of the two elected positions, has previously served as vice-chair. She will be chairwoman for the new board year, which begins in March.
Other adjustments include Pat Lowery as vice chairperson and Willie Harrison as secretary. Lucy Shell and James Tillman round out the remainder of the board.
The board room was packed with parents and students Tuesday night as Alexander Junior High School’s SOS choir gave a presentation.
The group sang two songs: an African piece followed by a rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway.” Both were well received by the board. Teacher Cynthia Edwards was conductor for the group.
“These students work between testing. They literally learned this song in about three or four days,” Edward said of “Breakaway.” “I’m very proud of this group. We went to competition and played excellent this year.”
Edwards said they will perform “Breakaway” again for their spring festival.
In other business at Tuesday’s board meeting:
• The board approved the amended 2015 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B and Preschool Project Application
• The board approved the highest bid for each item in a recent auction.
• The board approved the 2016-2017 school calendar.
• The board approved, as an amendment to financials, a $74,000 interfund loan.
