Beginning tonight, the Brookhaven Little Theatre will present its take on a Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
The play, adapted by James W. Rodgers, features a cast and crew of over 30 members. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday, Dec. 10, 11 and 12. On Sunday and Dec. 13, the group will present a matinee performance at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10 per person.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” Director and BLT President James Minter said BLT has been putting on Christmas plays for several years now, and they have run into similar problems. Each year, the first weekend has low attendance. Those people spread the news about how great the storyline is, so the second weekend is always packed.
“We wanted to come out with a play that people recognized,” he said. “Most people seem to be familiar with ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’”
The play is based on the 1946 Frank Capra movie of the same name. In it, George Bailey becomes downtrodden after spending his life giving to his family and community. He is met by a guardian angel, Clarence, who shows him what would have happened if he had never been born.
“Our George is great — well, they’re all great,” Minter said. “The costuming is very bright and vibrant, and you’ll have to see Clarence’s outfit.”
Minter said the cast has a wide range of ages, with the youngest just 7 years old. He said the story is great to help get people in the holiday spirit.
Minter said this group has been a lot of fun to work with.
“Usually at this point, I’m pulling my hair out, and I haven’t had that feeling yet,” he said.
BLT has been producing plays for 49 continuous years.
“It’s an organization that’s engrained in the community,” Minter said.
BLT has spent a lot of effort restoring the Haven Theater on Cherokee Street, including lighting up the marquee sign. With the city’s new tourism campaign, Cherokee Street and the Haven sign are featured prominently as the icon of Brookhaven.
And they’re not finished yet with the work on the historic building. Minter said they currently are focusing on a project to renovate the lobby.
