A court hearing for the Brookhaven man charged with capital murder in the death of a toddler was pushed back to Nov. 2.
Jamaal Brown, accused of the murder of 13-month-old Preston Reynolds, was scheduled for a hearing Monday in Lincoln County Circuit Court.
Brown’s indictment, filed Sept. 3, 2014, accuses Brown of “striking Preston Reynolds a/k/a Preston Jude Heath on the head or otherwise abusing Preston … in such a manner as to cause him serious bodily harm.” An autopsy report showed Reynolds had a fractured skull and contusions to the face.
Brown, of 1205 Broken Lane, is out on a $100,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty at his capital murder bond hearing in September.
Brown’s attorney, Matthew Kitchens, previously said Brown was the one who brought the child to the hospital after the injury in January and stayed with him there until the child died. He added that Brown gave a detailed report to the police department.
If found guilty, Brown could face the death penalty, life in prison with or without parole, or a combination of sentences, according to District Attorney Dee Bates.
