Jenna Segura said a witch got her involved with the Brookhaven Little Theatre Drama Camp.
About seven years ago, Segura’s older sister was doing makeup for the BLT’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” when Segura said a witch told her she should try out the theater’s drama camp if she liked acting. Segura took the witch’s advice and is currently working her first year as a camp counselor after completing six years as a camper.
“I had amazing counselors when I was camper.” Segura said she wanted to work with children and be that type of counselor for them. “I’m trying to live up to what my counselors were to me.”
Segura said this year she was in charge of first graders at the camp.
“Little kids are so excited. They like to mess around a lot, but whenever it comes down to it they know then you’re serious,” Segura said.
She said as a counselor she’s given more responsibility and is expected to be able to handle more. Instead of playing larger parts in the production, counselors are given smaller parts to let the campers shine.
“On my first day there was a little girl, Libby. As soon as I told her I was her counselor she screamed ‘yay’ and hugged me. That was the best thing,” Segura said.
Chloe Warren is in her last year as a camper at the BLT Drama Camp and said she plans on being a counselor next year.
“I like being with kids,” Warren said. “They enjoy themselves there you can tell. I just like being in the theater environment.”
This is Warren’s seventh year being a camper. She said she got started in the first grade through Camp Director Joanna Sproles’s daughter Katie. She said as a camper, she likes that they get to do different things — art, games and other activities — instead of just watching plays.
“We’re in a theater environment, and we get to see how all this stuff works,” Warren said explaining what she enjoys about the camp. “You remember all the friends and counselors you have.”
For Segura, acting was her favorite thing about attending camp.
“You get to be other people and not just yourself all the time,” Segura said. “You get to act, simply that, but it’s really fun.”
Segura said she plans to be a counselor at the BLT Drama Camp as long as she can. Although she’s unsure if she is as great a counselor as she remembers her counselors being, Segura is working on reaching that level. She looks forward to getting involved again with more BLTeens productions as she gets older — she’s already participated in two productions.
The BLT Drama Camp is a two-week camp held in July for children entering first through seventh grade.
The BLT Drama Camp’s production for this year is “The Headless Horseman.” Performances are tonight and Friday at 6:30 p.m. BLT doors open at 5:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $5 at the door only and seating is first come, first serve. Sproles said the production this year will feature more than 50 campers this year, the second highest attendance in 11 years.
