BHS honors track and field athletes Thursday night

Brookhaven sophomore Arnancy Arnold and senior Randy Wilson received the Most Valuable Player honors Thursday night during the team’s Track and Field Awards Banquet.
Ole Brook Track and Field coach Darien Dorsey welcomed the crowd to the banquet and later delivered the invocation, which was held at the Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Department headquarters located on Highway 51 North.
“We had a very successful season and this special group of young men and women has really worked hard this season to make a return trip to state,” said Dorsey.
“The future looks really bright for the Panthers and Lady Panthers track and field teams,” continued Dorsey. “This sport has grown a lot over the past few years. When I first started we had only 40 players on the team and since then the numbers have grown tremendously thanks to these young men and women.”
Dorsey’s team finished sixth in State in girls’ competition and the boys’ placed 10th.
Prior to presenting the awards, Dorsey thanked his assistant coaches for their hard work. He also thanked the booster club, parents, friend and sponsors for their support. “I want to say thank you for your hard work and dedication in making our team successful.”
Johnaya Williams and Kenny Bellamy were recognized as the Team Captains. Tatyana Crump and Tajah Black received the Most Improved Award. Shakera Brewer and Randy Wilson earned the honors of the Most Valuable Field Event Participants.
Arnancy Arnold and Tyriq Reese were selected as the Most Valuable Distance Runners. The Most Valuable Sprinter honors went to Johnaya Williams and Thomas Poole.
Michael Harvey received the Coaches Award. Darius O’Quinn earned the Panther Award. Shakera Brewer and Ben Robinson earned the Therrell Tanner Award.
Artia Robinson and Montero Barton captured the Scholastic Award honors on the girls’ and boys’ track and field teams.
Several players were recognized during the banquet and received certificates for participation, fundraiser recognition, Varsity Letter recognition, and State 5A participation.
The seniors were also recognized and were given bags and bibles that were purchase by the boosters and sponsors.
