Saints beats Cobras to force Game Three

RIDGELAND – The Wesson Cobras fell to the St. Andrew Saints 4-1 in Game Two of the best-of-three series Thursday night, which ended up forcing a Game Three contest for Friday night in the third round of the Class 3A State Baseball Playoffs.
The Cobras (17-5) will host the Saints, tonight to decide who will advance to the South State championship next week. Game time is at 7 p.m.
St. Andrews 4, Wesson 1
The Wesson Cobras came out looking to complete the two-game sweep Thursday night, but the St. Andrews Saints thought otherwise as both team fought in a scoreless battle until the bottom of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Saints managed to take an early lead 1-0. They began with a single by John William Hardwick, who later scored when Ryan McCarthy hit a single.
The Cobras battled back to tie the game at 1-all in the top of the fourth inning, but the Saints would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored two runs on a two-run single by McCarthy.
St. Andrew added another run on the scoreboard to increase the lead to 4-1 and held on for the win.
Graham Grogan was the winning pitcher for St. Andrews with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Justin Boone suffered the setback on the mound for the Cobras with four strikeouts and one walk.
Ryan McCarthy and John Williams Hardwick powered the Saints’ offensive attack with two singles each. Kenny Bryson and Mark McCullan provided a double apiece. Bennre Kirkland had a single. Top defensive fielder for St. Andrews was Chris Boyle with five outs at first base.
Mack Smith and Preston Middleton were the top hitters at the plate for Wesson with a single each. Smith was the top defensive fielder at first base with four outs.
