BA’s Girls Doubles win MAIS State gold

JACKSON – Brookhaven Academy’s No. 1 And No. 2 Girls Doubles in tennis captured MAIS State AA Championship gold Wednesday afternoon at Parham Bridge Tennis Center.
Both girls doubles teams won their respective divisions, but ended up tying Manchester Academy of Yazoo City for the Girls State Overall Team Championship. The tiebreaker went in Manchester Academy’s favor because they had more finalists. Brookhaven Academy’s streak of 10 straight championships has been broken.
In Girls No. 1 Doubles action, BA’s Marlee Watts and Whitney Moak defeated Canton Academy 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal and defeated Manchester Academy 6-2, 6-2 in finals to win state championship gold.
With the win, Marlee Watts captured her third straight state championship crown in No. 1 Girls Doubles.
In Girls No. 2 Doubles action, BA’s Macey Lea and Missy Clanton defeated Kirk Academy in the semifinals due to an injury forfeit. In the finals, Lea and Clanton defeated Lee Academy 6-1, 6-3 to win gold.
With the win, Macey Lea secured her second straight state championship crown in Girls No. 2 Doubles.
In Mixed Doubles action, Brookhaven Academy’s Trent Nettles and Susanna Ratcliff lost to Manchester Academy 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals.
