Loyd Star’s sophomore Sidney Terril Lloyd Jr. captured state championship gold in the 123-pound division of the Class 2A State Powerlift meet in Jackson last Saturday.

“I was extremely excited about the opportunity that I had to compete in Jackson,” said Lloyd. “It was a great experience for me, and I was thrilled when I found out that I won gold in my first year of competing. I cannot wait to start preparing for next season.”

Loyd Star football coach Adam Cook started the powerlift team this season for the Hornets.

“I was very proud for Terril for winning gold in the individual event in Jackson,” said Cook. “We had great participation from everyone in our first year of competing. We are looking to build on what Terril accomplished and continue to grow stronger in every practice.”

While competing in Jackson, Lloyd broke three 13-year-old records in his first year. In dead lift, Lloyd lifted 435 pounds, breaking an old record of 430 pounds.

In squat, Lloyd set a new record after lifting 415 pound, breaking a previous record of 385 pounds. On bench press, he maxed out at 180 pounds.

Lloyd’s final total of points also set a record after earning a total of 1,030 pounds. The previous total record was 955 pounds.
