Team captains for Lincoln County’s Relay for Life event are preparing for the upcoming fundraiser set for May 2.

Nona Sutton is a clinical liaison from SouthernCare Hospice and captain of their Relay team.

“It’s fun, but it’s my first time,” Sutton said.

She said leading the team came about because it is part of her job description and because of her own desire to serve as the group’s leader.

Courtney Welch, receptionist at Countrybrook Living Center, is the team leader for her workplace and said the experience so far has been rewarding.

“As captain at Countrybrook I have the opportunity to see co-workers, friends and residents come together as a team to help raise money for cancer research,” Welch said. “Our team is excited about the changes coming for this year’s Relay.”

Welch said some of the changes for this year include the track and tents being set in the already existing Exchange Club booths. She said this will allow for more handicapped parking, a more organized concession area and will also give Relay-goers more activities to choose from.

Welch said there will be food and games for all ages. Opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m., and fair rides will begin following the National Anthem and continue until 8:45 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9 p.m., and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Countrybrook has T-shirts for sale for $15 (order and money are due by April 15). Welch said Countrybrook is also selling handmade quilt and knife raffle tickets for $2 each or three for $5 as well as unlimited armband tickets for $10 in preparation for the Relay for Life event in May.
