A Brookhaven man has been sentenced to 20 years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to manslaughter Tuesday morning.

Jerrod Tashod Doss, who was arrested Nov. 21, 2013, in the murder of Cornelius D. Porter entered his plea before Lincoln County Circuit Court Judge David Strong.

Monday, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for a status hearing. Doss, 36, arrived for the hearing after Strong left and was arrested.

Doss’s initial arrest in 2013 was in connection to the murder of Porter, 28, of 1013 Douglas Drive, McComb. Porter’s burned, unidentified body was found Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, on Washington Street in Brookhaven. The body was identified as Porter in early November 2013.

The investigation uncovered that Porter was killed by at least two gunshots and transported to a secluded area on South Washington Street. John Riggs, Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff at the time, said in an interview in 2013 that one of the wounds was in the head, and one was in the chest.

Almost two weeks after Porter’s body was found, two Brookhaven residents were arrested in connection to the murder. Karal Shun Lyons, 28, of 401 Crooked Lane for murder and Marshonna Shanta Dunnigan, 37, of 334 East Minnesota St. as an accessory after the fact. Lyons was indicted Sept. 3, 2014, for accessory after the fact.

Doss was arrested Nov. 19 later that year in Ridgecrest, Louisiana, by the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Department after they discovered Doss’s abandoned vehicle. The Brookhaven Police Department, led by Chief Bobby Bell, had issued a warrant and a nationwide BOLO (Be On the Look Out). Doss was indicted Sept. 3, 2014, for first degree murder.
