The Brookhaven Panthers captured a splits decision in Friday and Saturday’s high school baseball action.

In Friday night contest, the Ole Brook Panthers dominated the Natchez Bulldogs to remain undefeated in Region 6-5A action with a 17-5 win over the Bulldogs in Natchez.

In Saturday afternoon action, the Panthers suffered a tough 15-1 loss to the defending Class 3A State champions, the Sumrall Bobcats, at Moyer Field.

Brookhaven (4-7, 2-0) will be in action Tuesday as they prepare to host the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Brookhaven 17, Natchez 5 

The Panthers came out and quickly overpowered the Bulldogs in the first three innings to secure a 10-0 advantage, before the Bulldogs rally back in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs to keep the contest alive.

In the fifth and sixth innings, the Panthers would outscore Natchez 7-2 to win the contest in six innings on the mercy rule.

Tate Walley was the winning pitcher for the Panthers with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Ole Brook out hit Natchez 14-7 as Scotty Bateman powered Brookhaven’s offense with a double and three singles. Penn Wilson contributed a triple and a single. Brandon Henyard and Connor Smith provided a pair of singles. Walley hit a triple. Judson Henning and Blaine Moak ripped a double apiece. Jon Mark Mathis had a single.

Sumrall 15, Brookhaven 1 

In Saturday contest, the Sumrall Bobcats dominated the Panthers early to take a commanding 10-0 in four innings of action, before Brookhaven managed to break up Sumrall’s hut out in the bottom of the fourth inning as they pushed across one run.

In the top of the fifth inning, Sumrall would increase their lead with a five-run surge to take a 15-1 lead and held on for the win.

Joseph McLaurin pitched the win for Sumrall with five strikeouts and one walk.

Penn Wilson absorbed the setback on the mound for Ole Brook with one strikeout and three walks. Reese Reynaud (0K, 4BB) and Scotty Bateman (0K, 2BB) also saw some action on the mound in relief.

Clint Stephens, Scotty Bateman and Penn Wilson paced the Panthers at the plate with a single each.

Jarrod Shuck was the top hitter for Sumrall with a double and two singles. Trace Jordan provided two singles. Joseph McLaurin had a double. Landon White and Tyler Bunch hit safely.
