WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves picked up a big divisional doubleheader sweep of Pearl River in two tight games in Wesson on Monday. A Kaitlyn Taylor RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning powered Co-Lin to a 3-2 win in game one. In game two the Lady Wolves used ten hits and five runs over the final two innings to secure a 6-3 victory of the Lady Wildcats.

Co-Lin 3, Pearl River 2 

Pearl River held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Co-Lin tied it with two runs. The Lady Wolves got their first run on an RBI single by Lauren Brashier that scored Adrienne Wallace. Jessica Crum would then score Savannah Johnston with an RBI single of her own. Co-Lin only managed six hits in the game and Johnston, a sophomore from North Pike High School, finished 2-for-3.

Co-Lin pitcher Kamry Creel picked up the complete game win after giving up two runs on seven hits. Creel walked one and struck out two in seven innings. Creel overcame big adversity in the sixth inning when Pearl River had the bases loaded with two away. Creel coaxed Brand Northrop to fly out to Wallace in left field to end the inning.

Co-Lin got their game winning inning started with a walk by sophomore Breanna McKenzie. Freshman speedster Carmen Perry came in to run for McKenzie. Perry would then steal second and set up Taylor’s game winning hit. With two out, Taylor roped a double to left field off of Rachel Hickman that brought Perry home from second and gave Co-Lin a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.

“Kamry did a good job in the circle,” said Lady Wolves coach Allen Kent. “She allowed no earned runs and we got a big hit by Kaitlyn Taylor to give us the lead,” said Kent.

Co-Lin 6, Pearl River 3

Again it would be Pearl River who jumped out to the early lead, this time with three runs in the top of the first inning. Co-Lin chipped into the lead by scoring one run in the third inning on a solo homerun by Jessica Crum.

Co-Lin dropped the hammer in the fifth inning with four runs to take control of the game. Savannah Johnston and Lauren Brashier opened the inning with back to back singles. They both scored on a two RBI double by Jessica Crum. Co-Lin got two more runs when sophomore Payton Sheffield laced a two RBI double down the right field line. Co-Lin added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Crum scored Johnston on a groundout to second base.

Johnston finished 4-for-4 and scored two runs. Crum went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Sheffield went 2-for-3. Freshman Lucy Lewis picked up the win in the circle after giving up three runs on six hits in seven innings. Lewis struck out two and walked one.

“Lucy settled in and pitched well and Jessica Crum and Savannah both had a great game at the plate,” said Kent. “These were two big wins that get us back in the division mix,” said Kent.

Co-Lin (11-9, 5-7 Division) travel to Raymond on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with the Hinds Lady Eagles.
