Loyd Star thumps Bassfield

BASSFIELD – The Loyd Star Hornets completed the series sweep over the Bassfield Yellowjackets winning 14-1 Friday night in Region 7-2A baseball action in Bassfield.

“Levi Redd did a good job on the mound keeping Bassfield’s hitter in check,” Loyd Star Coach Jared Britt said. “Our defense played well behind him. Offensively, we started off slow but were able to heat up later in the innings.”

The Hornets (5-3, 2-0) return to action Tuesday as they prepare to travel to Columbia to take on the East Marion Eagles for another big Region 7-2A test. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 14, Bassfield 1 

The Hornet and the Yellowjacket of Bassfield battled in a close contest in the first inning as Loyd Star had a 2-1 lead.

In the third, fourth and fifth innings, the Hornets outscored Bassfield 12-0 to win the game in five innings of action.

Levi Redd was the winning pitcher for Loyd Star with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Keenan McLaurin suffered the loss for Bassfield on the mound with four strikeouts and nine walks.

Brett Calcote powered the Hornets’ offense with a double and a single. Bradyn Brister contributed two singles. Levi Redd blasted three singles. Hitting safely were Konner Allen, Cade Hodges and Cole Smith.

Ron Thompson recorded the only hit for Bassfield at the plate with a single.

In junior varsity action,  Loyd Star defeated Bassfield 2-1.

Brandon Lang (8K, 1BB) tossed the win for Loyd Star. Logan Murray (3K, 1BB) collected the save.

Malik Shorts took the lost for the Yellowjackets with three strikeouts and one walk.

Jordan Michel paced the Hornets at the plate with a double and a single. Dylan Smith had a single.

Cade Perrin led Bassfield’s offense with a single.
