Lady Hornets dominate Bassfield

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets managed to finally host their first home game of the season Thursday night, after Mother Nature denied them on several occasions to start the season.
The Lady Hornets kicked off their home opener with a big 11-1 win over the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets in Region 7-2A fastpitch softball action at Jan Smith Delaughter Field.
The Lady Hornets (5-2, 2-0) continues action today as they travel across the county to Bogue Chitto to take on the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.
Loyd Star 11, Bassfield 1
The Lady Hornets kicked off their home opener strong as they quickly took command of the contest in the first two innings of action to claim an early 4-0 lead.
After two scoreless endings, Loyd Star managed to finish off the Bassfield Lady Yellowjacket in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Lady Hornets exploded with a seven-run surge to win the game on a 10-run mercy rule.
Bassfield scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning.
Ali Gartman collected the win for Loyd Star after a strong pitching performance of 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Erica Booth absorbed the lost on the mound for Bassfield with two strikeouts and six walks.
Gartman also lead the Lady Hornets at the plate with a double and a single. Julie Smith contributed two singles. Mackenzie Smith ripped a triple. Hitting safely were Madison Jones, Abigail Thornton and Johnna Norman.
Mishaiel Hall provided the only hit for the Lady Yellowjacket with a single.
In junior varsity action, Loyd Star clobbered the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets 12-1.
Kelsie McCullough (3K, 0BB) and Aly Floyd (2K, 2BB) pitched the win for the Lady Hornets.
Katie West was the top hitter at the plate for Loyd Star with a double. Carly Beth Wallace and Marley Poole hit a single each.
