Update: Chief Bell has confirmed two deaths in the shooting; that of Jermaine Sims Sr., 31, and one of the children. Bell was not able to publicly identify which child died. Victoria Sims and the other two children are still hospitalized.

Five people, including three children, have been hospitalized after a shooting early Friday morning inside a Brookhaven home on South First Street.

Jimmy Lyons, of 1088 South First Street where the incident took place, has been arrested on five counts of aggravated assault. All five victims have been hospitalized – one in Southwest Medical Center and four in Jackson – with some in critical condition.

Brookhaven Police Department Chief Bobby Bell said his department received a call at 12:20 a.m. this morning from a citizen who was concerned that a woman had been attacked by a dog.

Upon arrival, officers found Victoria Sims, 29 with two children, all of 1088 South First Street. Sims and both children were wounded. Bell said Sims relayed the story that an altercation had started between her husband, the children’s father, Jermaine Sims, 31, of the same address, and Jimmy Lyons. Sims told officers that she left the house with two kids but there were still two people in the house, a third child and her husband. The Sims have three children: one son, age six, and two daughters, ages nine and 14.

Officers arrested Lyons and investigation into the matter has started. Chief Bell said that all they know is that there was an altercation and his team only has one side of the story. Only one gun was involved in the incident.
