Loyd Star defeats East Marion

COLUMBIA – The Loyd star Hornets and the Lady Hornets swept a pair of Region 7-2A basketball game from the East Marion Eagles Tuesday night.
In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets were victorious over the Lady Eagles 47-34.
In the boys’ game, the Hornets managed to escape with a 61-59 win over the Eagles.
Loyd Star resumes action Friday as they return home to host the Amite County Trojans. The girls varsity game is schedule to start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Loyd Star 47, East Marion 34
The Lady Hornets and the Lady Eagles fought in defensive contest in the opening quarter as Loyd Star secured a 13-12 lead.
In the second quarter, the Lady Hornets (13-3, 3-0) managed to increase their lead with a 12-9 run to take a 25-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Loyd Star outscored East Marion 22-13 in the final two frames to collect the win.
“The girls played steady offensively and defensively throughout the whole game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Overall, I was very pleased with my girls effort and we are glad to get the win on the road.”
Marcey Givens powered the Lady Hornets with 19 points, seven steals and the two assists. Mackenzie Smith contributed 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Jordan Shelby chipped in with eight points and gathered four rebounds. Hannah Dickerson also had four rebounds and added four points.
Asia Harvey was the top scorer for the Lady Eagles with nine points. Jerrica Echols provided eight points.
Loyd Star 61, East Marion 59
In the boys contest, the Hornets and Eagles battled in a close contest as both teams were tied at the end of the first half at 31-all.
In the third quarter, East Marion managed to gain control with a 19-12 run to take a 50-43 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets (13-3, 3-0) rallied back to take over the contest with a 18-9 run to secured the win.
“We played very sloppy ball in the first half,” said Britt. “In the second half, we managed to fight through the see-saw battle to rally back in the fourth quarter to collect the win. East Marion has a good team and it was tough to beat them on their home floor.”
Senior forward Edrick Alsworth pumped in a game-high double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hornets. Caleb Yarborough chipped in with 16 points and three assists. Ryan Smith added seven points. Levi Redd helped on the boards with seven rebounds.
Jermaine Burkett led the Eagles with 18 points. Malik Rawls provided 16 points.
In junior varsity girls action, Loyd Star destroyed East Marion 35-3.
Caylee Yarborough was the top scorer for the Lady Hornets with six points. Lydia Britt contributed five points.
