Kayla Britt is taking her softball skills to the next level. Wesson’s catcher/shortstop has signed a softball scholarship with the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves..

Britt, a 5-foot-4, right-hander, signed her official scholarship papers Friday in the Wesson Library. She is the daughter of Landon and Teresa Britt.

“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to play softball at Co-Lin,” said Britt. “Coach Allen Kent is a very good, nice coach and I am ready to start playing for him.

Kayla mentioned that she wants to pursue a degree in nursing, when she begins college. She currently has a 3.7 grade point average at Wesson Attendance Center.

As a junior, Kayla batted .397 for the Lady Cobras. She accounted for 36 RBI, eight stolen bases, six doubles, two triples and one home run. As a catcher for Wesson, she a .983 fielding percentage against opposing teams.

“We have watched Kayla develop a lot these past couple of years,” said Co-Lin softball coach Allen Kent. She is very versatile and cane play pretty much anywhere on the field, except as a pitcher. Kayla brings some experience at catcher, which is always a good thing. She handles the bat well and is eager to learn more.”

“Kayla is a good kid from right here in our own backyard in Wesson and we couldn’t be happier to have her join us,” continued Kent. “Former Wesson coach Jackie Stowe Johnson was a big part of our 2006 team that finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament. Jackie and current Wesson softball coach Michelle Cochran Nunnery have been really high on Kayla’s talents. I know Michelle will continue to work hard and develop these girls at Wesson.”

Kent is entering his 13th year as coach of the Lady Wolves. His teams have been in the playoffs, or very close in every season. His squads have boasted three MACJC State Championship, two Regional Titles, NJCAA National Runners-Up and a third place finish in the National Tournament. The MACJC South Division is widely regarded as the strongest division in the NJCAA.

“Kayla is a great athlete and a great kid as well,” said former Wesson coach Johnson. “I am excited for her and the opportunity she has to play at Co-lin. She was a pleasure to coach and I feel like she will be a great asset to their program.”

Kayla also plays on the Lady Cobras’ basketball team. Currently in her senior season, she is averaging 9 points per game.

Britt stated she has earned plenty of awards in playing sports at Wesson like being recognized as a MSHSAA All-Star in 2014, and being named as the DAILY LEADER’s Defensive Player in 2014, but her biggest achievement is earning a softball scholarship to play for Co-Lin.

“As I told Kayla today, this will be a day she never forgets,” said Wesson softball coach Michelle Nunnery. “Not everyone gets the opportunity to play past the high school level.

“Coach Kent will have a great asset for the next couple of years,” continued Nunnery. “She’s a great leader on and off the field. It doesn’t hurt that she can also play anywhere on the field and is easy to coach. She will most definitely be missed but we look forward to watching her play at the next level.”
