MCCOMB – The Brookhaven Panthers climbed back into the win column late Wednesday afternoon with a 80-48 victory over the North Pike Jaguars in the final day of the McComb’s Holiday tournament at McComb Gymnasium.

In the girls contest, the winless Lady Panthers suffered another tough loss as they fell 59-18 to the Lady Jaguars of North Pike.

In early tournament action, Tylertown sweeps Wilkinson County. In the girls’ game, the Tylertown Lady Chiefs skinned the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats 60-40. In boys’ action, the Chiefs edge the Wildcats 57-55.

Brookhaven resumes action today as they travel to Monticello to battle the Lawrence County Cougars in a three games series. The junior varsity boys tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity action.

Lady Jaguars 59, Lady Panthers 18 

The Lady Jaguars came out and quickly set the tone of the contest as they put together a 10-1 run to end the first quarter of action. North Pike continued to overwhelm Brookhaven to increase their lead with a 17-8 run to take a 27-9 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Jaguars outscored the Lady Panthers 32-9 to collect the win.

Shoniece Smith and Chantel Quarles were the top scorers for the Lady Panthers (0-15) with four points apiece. Yasmine Hill added three points.

Rachel Thompson powered the Lady Jaguars’ offense with 16 points. NaQuesha Young chipped in with 10 points

Brookhaven 80, North Pike 48 

In the boys contest, the Panthers and the Jaguars provided an exciting first quarter of action as both teams fought back and forth in a close game as Brookhaven claimed a 15-14 advantage.

In the second quarter of play, the Panthers turned up the heat on the Jaguars with a 22-9 run to take a 37-23 lead into halftime.

In the second half of action, Brookhaven outscored North Pike 43-25 in the final two frames.

“Glad to get the win,” said BHS coach Preston Wilson. “Our guys did a good job bouncing after a tough loss to McComb to earn this win. Overall, I was pleased with their effort and I was glad to give everyone plenty of playing time.”

Shon Blackwell directed the Panthers’ charge with 15 points. Tavis Moore contributed 14 points and had four rebounds. Tyriq Reese provided 12 points and Damarius Brooks added 11 points, three steals and two assists.

Ladarrius Durr was the top shooter for the Jaguars with a game-high 27 points. Javion Jackson paced North Pike with 13 points.
