BOGUE CHITTO – The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets swept a pair of basketball games from Enterprise in Lincoln County Round-Robin tournament action at the Bobcat Palace.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets managed to withstand a late fourth quarter rally to clip the Lady Jackets 39-35.

In the boys’ contest, the Hornets broke open a close contest in the third quarter to roll to a 72-45 victory.

Loyd Star returns to action Tuesday as they visit Wesson to take on their long time rivals the Wesson Cobras for four games. Junior high action begins at 4 p.m. The varsity girls’ contest begins at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ game.

Enterprise will be on the road Tuesday as they invade the Mize Bulldogs to play three games. The junior varsity boys’ tip off at 5 p.m., followed by varsity action at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 39, Enterprise 35 

The Lady Hornets and Lady Jackets gave their basketball fans a sneak preview of the exciting battle that will occur when district action begins.

In the opening quarter, Loyd Star and Enterprise battled back and forth in a defensive contest as the Lady Hornets claim a 10-7 lead.

In the second quarter, the Lady Hornets (6-2) managed to extend their lead with a 15-12 pushed to take a 25-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Jackets (7-3) rallied back to outscore Loyd Star 16-14 in the final two frames but fell short at the end of the comeback.

“The girls did a good job bouncing back from a let down Thursday night and played really well,” Loyd Star Coach Gene “Moochie” Britt said. “I was really pleased their effort and was really impressed with our bench stepping up to help us win.”

Hannah Dickerson powered the Lady Hornets’ offense and defense with 15 points and seven rebounds. Toni Banks contributed nine points, four rebounds and four assists. Lydia Britt scored five points, four rebounds and four steals.

Courtney Greer and Megan Rippy were the offensive leaders for the Lady Jackets with seven points apiece. Rippy was also the leader on the boards with six rebounds. Carlee Nations and Hannah Kirtfield provided five points each.

“We have got to do a better job shooting and moving the ball around offensively,” Enterprise coach Jill Nations said.

Loyd Star 72, Enterprise 45 

In the boys’ contest, the Hornets and Jackets game was similar to the girls’ contest as both teams fought hard in exciting back and forth contest. After one quarter of action, Loyd Star lead 21-15.

In the second quarter, the Jackets and Hornets scored 14 points apiece as Loyd Star took a 35-29 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Hornets came out on fire and blasted the Jackets with a 33-6 run to take control of the game at 68-35.

In the final quarter, Enterprise (5-5) outscored Loyd Star 10-4 but could not overcome the Hornets’ large lead.

“The guys played really well in the final two quarters of action,” Britt said. “Our defensive pressure helped us gain control of the contest in the third quarter. Enterprise did a good job keeping the game close in the first half.”

Senior guard Caleb Yarborough pumped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Hornets (7-1). Edrick Alsworth chipped in with 20 points and lead on the boards with nine rebounds. Levi Redd provided 10 points and five rebounds.

Dwayne Pendleton was the top scorer for the Jacket with 21 points and eight rebounds. Zach Hodges, Jarrod Dixon and Jontavious Smith helped with five points each.

“The guys played great in the first half,” Enterprise coach John Knight said. “The second half was a total different story through. Loyd Star came out and took charge in the third quarter and never looked back. Overall, we need to learn to play all four quarter to compete.”
